The colours and markings remind me of Gunbuster and the overall shape and cape remind me of Dix-Neuf from Diebuster. There's also a bit of Giant Robo in there somewhere. Though you were probably thinking more along Ghibli lines.

in my head I'm mostly ripping off Big O because I quite like that design. I'll look up gunbuster right now and see if i can find an episode.
